The Best Part About Being a Dad
I thought I’d jump on this post early to give a baseline of what I think about being a dad. Being a father has been one of the greatest challenges of my life. It is a test of character, patience, creativity and perseverance all while functioning with less sleep than ever before in my life. Despite all the challenges, fatherhood has been the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. That is why I recommend it so highly 🙂
The Kids
The obvious answer to the best part of being a dad is: the kids. You get to bring a unique human soul into the world. We are working on… my wife is working on our fourth child right now and I can’t wait to see what they become. At the time of writing, I have a 7, 5 and 2 year old and I could not be more proud of each one.
As they grow and develop we, as fathers, get to discover who our kids were uniquely designed to be. I see myself as a research scientist observing them and taking notes on what makes them tick. Each one is different and beautiful in their own way.
The Challenge
I mentioned this earlier but the challenge of fatherhood is one that I wouldn’t (didn’t) pass up for anything. Nothing has been so refining to my character, mind and body. I have had to define my values in a way that I wouldn’t have had to otherwise. They say we learn best by teaching and that couldn’t be more true. We learn how to live life well by teaching others to live well.
My relationship and communication with my wife has grown as we are constantly discussing and tweaking our strategy to try to be better parents for our kids. I have been challenged to grow in patience and kindness as I am constantly bombarded by needs and requests and mediating disagreements.
The Fun
The last aspect of fatherhood that I want to highlight is the fun. We get an opportunity to be the bringer of joy to our families. We just get to goof around and be silly with our children. There is nothing better than a good ol’ fashion wrestle mania throw down. From the basic ever day activities like legos and puzzles to the big family trips to Disney; our job is to create an atmosphere of joy and pleasure in our families. It is a great bonus to be able to play all the games we enjoyed as kids.
Being a father is a great calling and can be majorly challenging but nothing in life is more rewarding. If you are a dad, which I am guessing you are, I encourage you to give it your all. Read books, create experiences and pour yourself into your children. There is no more worthwhile endeavor in your life.
