How to make running errands more fun

There are a lot of different things that we can do with our kids but spending quality time with your kids doesn’t always have to involve elaborate plans or expensive activities. Sometimes, the simplest moments can be the most meaningful. One way dads can spend quality time with their kids is by taking them along on errands. This might sound like a mundane activity, but it can be a great opportunity to bond with your kids and teach them valuable life skills. I always try to take one of my kids with me when I am running a few errands and they almost always jump on the opportunity.

A scientific study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family found that fathers who were involved in routine activities, such as grocery shopping and errands, had stronger relationships with their children. This is because these activities offer an opportunity for dads to engage in everyday conversation and problem-solving with their kids.

When I take my kids with me, we get opportunities to talk and have some one on one time together. They get to see how I interact with people outside of the house and how I make financial decisions. These simple moments can have a big impact.

So dads, how can we make the most of running errands with their kids? Here are a few tips:

  1. Involve your kids: Let your kids help you with small tasks, such as finding items on the grocery list or counting out change. This will make them feel like they are contributing and valued.
  2. Use the time to talk: Use the time in the car or waiting in line to chat with your kids. Ask them about their day or discuss their interests.
  3. Turn it into an adventure: Running errands doesn’t have to be boring. Turn it into an adventure by taking a different route or exploring a new store.
  4. Teach life skills: Use the opportunity to teach your kids important life skills, such as budgeting, decision-making, and problem-solving.
  5. Get them a snack: If you are going to multiple places, the blood sugar can run low. I always like to get my kids a little something at the check-out line.

Spending quality time with your kids doesn’t always have to be complicated or expensive. Running errands together is a simple but effective way to bond with your kids and teach them valuable life skills. By involving your kids, using the time to talk, turning it into an adventure, and teaching life skills, you can make the most of this time together and create lasting memories.
